Alphabeat - and musical nepotism

Really enjoyed the Alphabeat gig at Koko last night.  Good fun band, with a very pleasant on-stage personality; good musicians (really like their drummer!); and excellent songs on the whole, though a bit too much of the set was just carbon-copying the recordings (I always think live shows should be used to expand on what you did in the studio).

New Face

"New Face", a song I've had rattling about for a while but have never managed to finish, has finally made it onto the website.  Have a listen to the clip on the music page, or hear the full song on my MySpace - and as always, it'd be great to hear what you think.

Married!

Yes indeed, Jess and I were married on 27th March.  Thanks to all of you who sent your good wishes, and who helped make our dayso wonderful.

Proud as a Pigeon

Fat Pigeon played the Regional Finals of the 2010 Live & Unsigned competition today, and let me tell you, we had a grand time!

Each band had to play one cover and one original - so we opted for Smoke On The Water, and a song we wrote about one of the usherettes an hour before the performance (the same tactic worked last time, after all!) Our choice of instruments: the Bogdon Box Bass and the Mercator Jupiter Cigar Box Guitar. And a Kazoo.

Evenin' all

Amazingly, knuckling down and doing some practice really worked out - played for the City of London Police LGBT society last night and it all went marvellously. Had great fun playing, met some charming coppers, and got some really good feedback.

There's a lesson to be learnt here, boys and girls - don't whinge about it: do some bloody work!

New Snap!

Took a break from doing what I should be doing, and recorded a new Snap song, "Emo Boy", ready and waiting for your ears on the music page.

Just a bit of daftness.

Jazz

I hate playing Jazz.

I love listening to certain Jazz artists (Oscar Peterson, for example, I could listen to all day and night without a rest; and Ben Webster, too). But I hate playing Jazz.

Brits 2010

Nice to see Robbie Williams getting an award for Guy Chambers' outstanding contribution to music...

You should be dancing - yeah!

Just got back from a weekend of Lindy Hop at the Goodnight Sweetheart camp up in exotic Hertfordshire.  It was really my first proper shot at dancing since The Incident, so I was a touch worried that the leg wasn't going to manage and I'd end up having a miserable and painful weekend.

Current work

Been given a demo by a songwriter who'll be pitching the song to an 80's starlet and celebrity gardener in May.  It's a good little tune, and it's my job to tart it up and get it sounding like a marketable pop track.

My first drafts of the track are sounding a bit lacklustre - more like The Saturdays than Girls Aloud - but it's early days.  Getting a lovely girl singer in on Monday to record a rough vocal for me, so it'll be interesting to hear a female voice on it as opposed to mine!
